Early treatment of glaucoma is critical

Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve which is the nerve that carries vision information from your eye to your brain. Glaucoma is often referred to as the “silent thief of vision” because many forms of glaucoma have no symptoms or warning signs. Due to its gradual onset, you may not notice the damage to your vision until it becomes severe. Any vision loss due to glaucoma is permanent and irreversible. For this reason, it is critical to detect glaucoma early so the vision loss can be slowed or even prevented. During your eye exam, you will be screened for glaucoma.

Glaucoma treatment usually centers around lowering the pressure in your eye. We at Paragon Ophthalmology specialize in medical, laser, and surgical treatments for glaucoma.

Risk factors for developing glaucoma include:

  • Age (especially those over 60)
  • Eye trauma
  • Corticosteroid use
  • Family history of glaucoma
  • Race (African Americans are more likely to have glaucoma)
