Jonathan A. Rowe, MD

Graduated from the University of Michigan Medical School in Ann Arbor, Michigan and completed his residency training in ophthalmology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Following residency, he was an associate consultant in ophthalmology at the Mayo Clinic prior to private practice in Kalamazoo. Dr. Rowe has worked in Kalamazoo since 1999.

Joseph W. Doe IV, MD

Dr. Doe received his undergraduate training at University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. He received his Medical Doctorate from Michigan State University College of Human Medicine and received residency training in Kalamazoo Michigan, followed by Ophthalmology training at Loyola of Chicago and Hines Veterans Hospital of Chicago.

Brendan F. Butler, MD

Dr. Butler, a Kalamazoo native, has been serving the local population since 2018. After graduating from Kalamazoo College, he received his medical degree from New York University School of Medicine in 2011. He returned to Kalamazoo for internship training before going back to NYU and Manhattan Eye, Ear, and Throat Hospital for residency training in ophthalmology. Dr. Butler then moved to Portland, Oregon where he undertook specialized training in the medical and surgical treatment of glaucoma at Oregon Health & Science University and Devers Eye Institute. Dr. Butler worked in Southern Oregon while enjoying the rugged beauty of the Pacific Northwest for a couple years, but ultimately decided to return to his hometown Kalamazoo where he could enjoy more time with his family.

Julie L. McMullen, OD

Dr. Julie L. McMullen, our optometrist, joined Paragon Ophthalmology in 2007. She performs comprehensive eye examinations, including diabetic eye exams, and works with patients of all ages. She specializes in contact lenses, including difficult to fit cases, and has participated in several contact lens studies. She is currently accepting new patients.  

Dr.  McMullen has been practicing in the Kalamazoo area since 1994 after graduating with high distinction from the Michigan College of Optometry. As a fourth year optometry student, she received the Pilkington-Barnes-Hind Student Recognition Award for her work with contact lenses, and the Bernell Clinical Optometry Award for her patient care. She completed her undergraduate education at Western Michigan University where she earned a B.S. in Biomedical Sciences and Chemistry. She also earned a B.S. in Vision Sciences from Ferris State University.

Dr. McMullen is very active in the Michigan Optometric Association (MOA) and recently served as President of the MOA for 2019-20. She is also active in the American  Optometric Association. She has served as president of the Southwest Michigan Optometric Association since 2008. She is a Diplomate of the American Board of Optometry, and has been a continuing education course reviewer for the Council on Optometric Practitioner Education (COPE) since 2011. She has participated in VOSH Missions to Honduras in the past. She is currently pursuing her Fellowship in the American Academy of Optometry.

In her spare time, Dr. McMullen enjoys traveling, scrapbooking, playing in the dirt (also known as gardening), photography, writing, and spending time with family.

Matt Houck, OD
Matt Houck, OD

Matt Houck, OD

Dr. Matt Houck has been practicing in the Kalamazoo and Portage area for 3 years. Originally from West Lafayette, Indiana, Dr. Houck completed his undergraduate studies in Physics at Purdue University before deciding to pursue his Doctorate of Optometry at Indiana University. After graduating in 2016, he started practicing in Iowa before moving to the Kalamazoo area in 2019. Dr. Houck performs comprehensive eye examinations, including evaluations for diabetes, cataracts, and ocular disease. He is also able to fit soft, rigid, and most specialty contact lenses for more difficult cases. Dr. Houck is currently accepting new patients.

When not working, Dr. Houck enjoys playing and watching sports (a Purdue/IU fan), traveling, and cooking. In fact, he was even featured on the nationally televised cooking competition MasterChef in 2018.
